Residents invited to information day about proposed upgrades to roads in Muizenberg

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is proposing road infrastructure upgrades in Muizenberg to increase the capacity of the local road network and improve public transport operations and active mobility. The first public information day will be hosted on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, and the public is encouraged to attend. The closing date for comments is 2 June 2025.
The proposed upgrades along Royal Road, Baden Powell Drive, Beach Road and Vlei Road form part of the directorate’s Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan and Congestion Relief Programme.
The City will be hosting two information days:
• Wednesday, 14 May 2025, from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Zandvlei Lookout Community Centre at the Zandvlei Nature Reserve, 57 Promenade Road, Lakeside
• Saturday, 17 May 2025, from 10:00 to 12:30 at the Zandvlei Lookout Community Centre at the Zandvlei Nature Reserve
‘This is the ideal opportunity to ask questions and submit comments. At these information days, City officials will give more clarity and detailed explanations of what we are proposing. I recommend that residents attend the sessions and participate in this commenting process as we are proposing a major investment in upgrading these roads,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The proposals are as follows:
Improvements along Royal Road from the intersection with Vlei Road to Prince George Drive
Turning Royal Road into a dual carriageway from the intersection with Vlei Road to Prince George Drive
Providing 5m-wide shared pedestrian and cycling facilities on the southern side of the road from the intersection with Vlei Road to Prince George Drive
Formalise the parking on both sides of Royal Road from Vlei Road to Prince George Drive and reconfigure the existing parking opposite Axminster Road with new access opposite Recreation Road
Provide embayments for public transport vehicles
Turn the intersection of Royal Road / Beach Road / Vlei Road into a dual lane roundabout with pedestrian crossings on all approaches
Convert the intersection of Royal Road and Axminster Road to a left-in/left-out system with a median barrier
Convert the intersection of Royal Road and Recreation Road into a full access signalised intersection, widened approach lanes, and sidewalk along Recreation Road
Convert the intersection of Royal Road and Margate Road into a left-in/left-out system with a median barrier
Convert the Royal Road and Sunrise Boulevard intersection into a left-in/left-out system with a median barrier; and
Convert the Royal Road / Baden Powell Drive / Prince George Drive intersection into a dual lane roundabout with two approach and receiving lanes on all legs and new pedestrian crossings
Improvements along Baden Powell Drive from Prince George Drive to Sanderling Road
Turn Baden Powell Drive into a dual carriageway from Prince George Drive to Sanderling Road
Provide a 3m-wide shared pedestrian and cycling facility on both sides of the road from Prince George Drive to Sanderling Road
Create public transport embayments and new mid-block crossings
Convert the intersection of Baden Powell Drive (R310) and Sunrise Boulevard into a full access signalised intersection; and
Convert the intersection of Baden Powell Drive (R310) / New Baden Powell Drive / Sanderling Road into a dual lane roundabout with pedestrian crossings on all legs
Improvements along Vlei Road from the intersections with Royal Road to Alexander Road
Improvements along Beach Road and Atlantic Road from Main Road to Royal Road
Convert the Civic Centre access at the intersection of Atlantic Road / Beach Road (R310) / Alexander Road into a left-in/left-out system off Atlantic Road; and
Provide a 2,5m-wide cycle lane on the southern side of Beach Road from Royal Road to the Muizenberg Civic Centre
‘The proposed upgrades will assist with the traffic flow along Baden Powell Drive and along some of the roads that carry high volumes of traffic within Muizenberg itself. All of these upgrades include facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to improve the safety of these vulnerable road users. These are proposals only, and I am encouraging the local residents, road users, and other stakeholders to submit their comments as we are investing in projects to keep Captonians moving. Those who use these roads and live in Muizenberg have firsthand experience of how these proposals can be further refined to better suit your needs,’ said Councillor Quintas.
